1. Learn To Say No
Learning to say NO can be difficult for a lot of us. When we cannot commit to a specific event, we feel we may be disappointing the other party. We tend to say yes, because it so much easier to do. We would rather deal with own internal negative struggles, then other people calling and annoying us on a daily or weekly basis.
However, saying NO is not meant to be a disappointment, its meant to strengthen you.
We have to make a decision to adjust and declutter areas of our life. Be true to yourself, your beliefs, your convictions and your priorities.
When a request comes your way, do not answer quickly. Think about your convictions and priorities and then say NO gracefully. Don’t tell them you will get back to them shortly, because you will end up saying yes out of guilt.
Remember to stay firm but polite. No other explanation is really necessary. If you feel obligated to say something then say: “It just does not fit into my schedule,” and this would be acceptable.

2. Start Removing “The Stuff” You Don’t Need
Your quest for simplifying can begin by getting rid of those things you’ve been hanging on to for years. First you need to decide where to begin.
Perhaps those old clothes that no longer fit, or decluttering the basement, closets, cupboards, garage, dressers, pantry… you get the idea. I am just as guilty as the next person. All of the areas I just listed are in need of decluttering at my home as well.
However, I have been trying to get a handle on it lately. I am either bundling up items to give to Goodwill or I am selling on ebay, facebook marketplace and craigslist. I am benefiting both ways; simplifying my life and making some extra cash along the way!
When you begin to remove those unnecessary items, you not only feel energized but you feel just a bit lighter personally, physically and emotionally!
3. Limit Your Buying Habits
Many times we are given to impulse buying which makes us buy what we need and what we don’t need. However, this can be controlled. Yeah!
- Make a shopping list
- Buy your items with cash
- Think before you buy. Ask yourself; do your really need this item?
- Stay within your budget
- Eat at home
- Embrace DIY projects
When we spend it feels fun and invigorating in the moment. It’s the minutes or weeks later where the “buyer’s” remorse can set in. You need to be aware of spending triggers, so you can eliminate impulse shopping sprees.
There are certain places and people who may encourage us to spend when it’s not necessary. Perhaps it’s the Starbucks around the corner you stop by every morning or a friend who tells you those shoes would look perfect with that new dress you just purchased.
It’s about having self control with those triggers, so you only spend what your budget allows. Try taking a different route to work or maybe you invite a friend to an exercise class instead of a trip to that cute boutique.
I know mindful spending habits may be difficult at first, however, they will produce a lifetime of rewards if you stick with them.
4. Spend Time With People You Love
Spend time with people who love you unconditionally and bring out the best of you. Sometimes the bond that links you to a true family, isn’t necessarily your blood relatives, it’s the people who bring you joy and respect you.
It’s rare nowadays that true family members even grow up under the same household. If you were not blessed to grow up in a family unit who supported or loved you, then go out and seek people who make you feel worthy and lift you up.
Once you found your family unit, cultivate and cherish those relationships. Keep in touch with them, love them, offer sympathy, support and encouragement.
When you spend time with the people you love, you fill more fulfilled and happier and isn’t happiness the essence of simplicity?
5. Spend Some Time By Yourself
Take time to meditate on your life and determine where you see yourself in 5, 10 or 15 years from now. It’s about discovering who you are emotionally, physically and spiritually.
Ask yourself; what is your true passion and purpose? What sets your soul on fire? You have the talents, gifts and experience… you just need to uncover them and walk in the direction of where you are led.
It’s time to shine your light!
Create your goals, plan your work and take action each day. When we listen to the silence and practice self care, we can hear the answers.
Final Note
Some people walk around and have no plan for their lives. A life without a plan, has no course and no direction. In order to simplify your life, you must plan and prepare.
